Facebook is cited in 20% of all divorce cases; and some lawyers are experiencing numbers upward to 80% or 90%. Does this prove that “Facebook Causes Divorce?” Nope. The problem with humanity today is the same problem that she has had since the Fall: sin (Rom. 3:23). Evil, wicked hearts alone cause ungodly divorces. The answer thus to ungodly divorce and the temptation to commit adultery is the saving gospel of Jesus Christ. These people that committed adultery through Facebook were simply one opportunity from adultery. Facebook provided them with this opportunity. We cannot blame sugary soft drinks for obesity, tobacco for lung cancer, media for corrupting our children, immodestly dressed men or women for our lust, social media for divorce, etc. The problem is sinful hearts, and the only solution is the good news found in Jesus Christ alone. All humanity must admit that the good news is Jesus Christ and that our sinful hearts are the bad news. Husbands and wives cheat because they believe a new relationship (sin) is the good news (gospel).  Why do they believe this lie?  Because their hearts are evil.

Some Scripture to Consider:

James 1:14-15 reads: But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Jesus in Mark 7:20-23 said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him.  For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.  All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Until sinners: 1) admit that their hearts are the problem, 2) Jesus is the answer, 3) they must be reconciled to God through Christ alone (John 14:6), 4) the good news is never sin, and 5) Jesus is the good news (gospel) alone; they will continue divorcing, cheating, eating, drinking, etc. themselves to death while blaming everything else but themselves.

In conclusion, in the divorce cases mentioned above, Facebook merely revealed the evil hearts of cheating spouses; and unfortunately, if you don’t deal with your wicked heart by coming to God through Christ alone, you too will be a negative statistic in some form or fashion—either in this life or in the life to come.
