History of Existence Redemptive Principle in Light of Galatians: God enjoyed perfect fellowship with Himself, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, continually before time and creation existed [History of Existence Theme] (Gen. 1:1, John 1:1). He sought to continue enjoying Himself thorough freely revealing His Trinitarian holiness and love to and through creation. He thus created all things, and allowed sin to temporally hide His holiness and love from sinners. God however set His redemptive plan in motion as detailed in Gen. 3:15. Satan would bruise Christ’s heal, but Jesus would crush his head. As a result of God seeking to continue enjoying Himself, He revealed His holiness and love to sinners by sending His Son to live a perfect life, to die for sins He did not commit, and to rise from the dead to reconcile sinners to Himself [Redemptive History Theme]. This truth is the only good news for sinners [Galatians 1 theme]. We know that the justification of sinners is found in Christ alone [Galatians 2 theme]. Salvation from sin is wonderful [Galatians 3 theme]. It sets believers apart for God’s glory [Galatians 4 theme]. There is only one true Gospel of Jesus Christ [Galatians 5 theme]. As a result of the Spirit’s work through this gospel, Christians must live in obedience to God [Galatians 6 theme]. Thus, Christians have the privilege of enjoying the Lord through this gospel, receiving His grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone [Galatians theme], as He enjoys Himself through reconciling us to Himself.

Galatians Theme: We know that Salvation is by God’s Grace Through Faith in Christ Alone because …

I. Galatians Chapter 1 – There is Only One Gospel for Sinners.

II. Galatians Chapter 2 – The Justification of Sinners is found in Christ Alone.

III. Galatians Chapter 3 – Salvation from Sin is Wonderful.

IV. Galatians Chapter 4 – Salvation sets Believers Apart for God’s Glory.

V. Galatians Chapter 5 – There is only One True Gospel of Jesus Christ.

VI. Galatians Chapter 6 – As a Result of the Spirit’s Work through the Gospel, Christians Must Live in Obedience to God.

I. Galatians Chapter 1 Theme: We know that there is only one gospel for sinners because there is only one…

A. Gal. 1:1-5 – Jesus Christ; and Christians must respond to salvation being through Jesus Christ alone because Jesus…

Gal.1:1… 1. sent His apostles to teach this.

Gal. 1:2… 2. saved the early church through this.

Gal. 1:3… 3. is the only Way to receive God’s grace.

Gal. 1:4… 4. is the only Way to be delivered from this evil world.

Gal. 1:5… 5. is the only Way we can bring glory to God.

B. Gal. 1:6-10 – Gospel of Jesus Christ. We know that there is only one Gospel of Jesus Christ because…

Gal 1:6-7… 1. God has determined to call sinners to repentance only through this gospel.

Gal. 1:8-9… 2. God has determined that every so-called new “gospel” is false.

Gal. 1:10… 3. God is pleased by the preaching of this gospel alone.

C. Gal. 1:11-24 – Gospel Paul preached. We know the apostle Paul preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ because…

Gal. 1:11-12… 1. He received it by revelation from Jesus.

Gal. 1:13-14… 2. This gospel was contrary to his entire upbringing and previous life.

Gal. 1:15-16… 3. God the Father called him to preach this gospel.

Gal. 1:16-21… 4. He was taught this gospel by God the Holy Spirit.

Gal. 1:22-24… 5. The other apostles and early church praised God because of him.

II. Galatians Chapter 2 Theme: We know justification is through Christ alone because…

A. Galatians 2:1-10 – Paul Preached the Good News. We know Paul Preached the Good News Because…

Gal. 2:1-3… 1. Early church leaders agreed with Paul concerning this gospel.

Gal. 2:4-5… 2. Only false teachers opposed this gospel.

Gal. 2:6-10… 3. Early church leaders publicly encouraged Paul to take this gospel to the Gentiles.

B. Galatians 2:11-14 – Paul Rebuked Peter. Paul rebuked Peter because…

Gal. 2:11… 1. He was being inconsistent about the gospel.

Gal. 2:12-13… 2. He led others into sin contrary to the gospel.

Gal. 2:14… 3. He was living at that moment as if the gospel was not true.

C. Galatians 2:15-21 – Salvation is not by the works of the Law. We know salvation is not by the works of the Law because…

Gal. 2:15-16… 1. God shows no partiality.

Gal. 2:17-18… 2. Sinners left their good works to run to Christ.

Gal. 2:19-20… 3. Our good works cannot save us.

Gal. 2:21… 4. Jesus died to give sinners the grace of God.

III. Galatians Chapter 3 Theme: Salvation from Sin is Wonderful because…

A. Galatians 3:1-5 – Salvation is the same at the beginning, present, and end. We are saved at the beginning, present, and end of our salvation …

Gal. 3:1… 1. By the finished work of Jesus alone.

Gal. 3:2… 2. Through Faith Alone.

Gal. 3:3… 3. By God’s Grace Alone.

Gal. 3:4-5… 4. By the empowering of God the Holy Spirit Alone.

B. Galatians 3:6-14Salvation is through Faith alone. We know that salvation is through faith alone because…

Gal. 3:6-9… 1. Father Abraham was saved through faith alone.

Gal. 3:10-12… 2. No fallen human can keep God’s Law 100%.

Gal. 3:13-14… 3. Faith is the only way to receive the free righteousness of Christ.

C. Galatians 3:15-18 – Salvation has always been by God’s grace. We know salvation is always by God’s grace because…

Gal. 3:15… 1. Even man-made covenants aren’t added to or taken away from once they’ve been signed.

Gal. 3:16… 2. Jesus Christ is the Seed of Abraham.

Gal. 3:17… 3. Obedience to God’s Law was never a stipulation for God’s grace to Abraham.

Gal. 3:18… 4. If good works save us, then grace is destroyed.

D. Galatians 3:19-25Salvation is by God’s grace, not our goodness. We know that salvation is by God’s grace, not our goodness because the Law of Moses was given…

Gal. 3:19-20… 1. To show us our sin.

Gal. 3:21-25… 2. To send sinners running to Jesus.

E. Galatians 3:26-29Salvation means that we are children of God. Christians are Children of God because we have…

Gal. 3:26… 1. Faith in Jesus Christ.

Gal. 3:27… 2. Been baptized by God the Holy Spirit.

Gal. 3:28… 3. Received God’s grace.

Gal. 3:29… 4. Been declared Abraham’s seed.

IV. Galatians 4 Theme: Salvation sets sinners apart for God’s glory because…

A. Galatians 4:1-11 – Christians Are Heirs of God’s Grace. Christians are heirs of God’s grace because we have…

Gal. 4:1-3… 1. Repented of ourselves.

Gal. 4:4-5… 2. Accepted the Finished Work of Christ.

Gal. 4:6… 3. Been sealed by God the Holy Spirit.

Gal. 4:7… 4. Become sons and daughters of God.

Gal. 4:8-11… 5. Continued believing and applying the gospel.

B. Galatians 4:12-20 – Christians are Set Apart to Pursue Being Faithful Witnesses of Jesus Christ. We are set apart to be faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ by…

Gal. 4:12… 1. Maintaining a passion for the lost.

Gal. 4:13-15… 2. Seizing the divine appointments given to us.

Gal. 4:16… 3. Telling the truth of the gospel.

Gal. 4:17-18… 4. Dealing with the stumbling blocks to conversion.

Gal. 4:19-20… 5. Laboring consistently until Christ is formed in the individual.

C. Galatians 4:21-5:1 – Every Man, Woman, and Child is either an ‘Isaac’ or an ‘Ishmael.’ We know if we are “Isaacs” or “Ishmaels” because…

Gal. 4:21-23 – 1.”Isaacs” are children of promise; “Ishmaels” are children of the flesh.

Gal. 4:24-27… 2. “Isaacs” are children of the New Jerusalem; “Ishmaels” are children of the Old Jerusalem.

Gal. 4:28-31… 3. “Isaacs” go to heaven; “Ishmaels” go to hell.

Gal. 5:1… 4. “Isaacs” continue in Christ’s freedom; “Ishmaels” continue in bondage.

V. Galatians 5 Theme: We Know that There is Only One True Gospel of Jesus Christ because…

A. Galatians 5:2-6 – Good Works Do Not Save. We know that good works do not save because…

Gal. 5:2…1. If we can earn salvation, then Jesus’ death does not benefit us.

Gal. 5:3…2. If good works save, then we must live perfectly.

Gal. 5:4…3. If we depend on good works to save, then we’ve fallen from grace.

Gal. 5:5…4. The Spirit saves through faith alone.

Gal. 5:6…5. Faith working through love is valuable to Christ.

B. Galatians 5:7-12 – Christ is the Truth. We know that Christ is the Truth because false teaching…

Gal. 5:7…1. Hinders obedience.

Gal. 5:8…2. Is not from God.

Gal. 5:9…3. Leavens the whole lump.

Gal. 5:10…4. Is not greater than God.

Gal. 5:10…5. Will be punished.

Gal. 5:11…6. Removes the offense of the cross.

Gal. 5:12…7. Requires a drastic response.

C. Galatians 5:13-15 – Christians are Free in Christ. Freedom in Christ…

Gal. 5:13…1. Is What Christians are called to possess and live out.

Gal. 5:13-14…2. Must Be Enjoyed with Love for others.

Gal. 5:15…3. Must Not be used to destroy one another.

Gal. 5:19-21…2. Not practice the deeds of the flesh.

Gal. 5:22-23…3. Practice the fruit of the Spirit.

Gal. 5:24-26…4. Live out their position in Christ.

VI. Galatians 6 Theme: As a Result of the Spirit’s Work Through the Gospel, Christians Must…

A. Galatians 6:1-5 – Hold One Another Accountable to Scripture. In order to practice Christian accountability biblically…

Gal. 6:1-2…1. Mature Christians must hold the immature accountable to the Word of God.

Gal. 6:3…2. Immature Christians must submit to mature Christians, realizing that they need accountability.

Gal. 6:4-5…3. All Christians must seek maturity in Christ by being accountable to themselves.

B. Galatians 6:6-10 – Do Good Things. Because Christians have been changed by the saving Gospel of Christ, we must:

Gal. 6:6…1. Bless our teachers.

Gal. 6:7-8…2. Sow to the Spirit.

Gal. 6:9…3. Persevere in doing good.

Gal. 6:10…4. Do good to all people.

Gal. 6:10…5. Especially, do good to all Christians.

C. Galatians 6:11-13 – Not Believe or Follow False Teachers. Christians Must Not Believe or Follow False teachers because they seek to…

Gal. 6:11-12…1. Gain the Applause of men.

Gal. 6:13…2. Gain converts for selfish reasons.
